Fire and Rescue

Overview

Fires are a frequent occurrence in Witzenberg Municipality during summer. We rely on accurate fire call outs from the public to assist us with our management of these incidents. It is crucial that the caller identify what is burning and the level of progress of the fire, i.e. a structure and its size, an informal dwelling or shack and how many, a field or a mountain and the estimated area of the fire. This information allows us to plan and send adequate personnel and resources to address the situation. Callers also need to provide us an accurate location of where the fire is taking place.

The Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Services strive to serve our community by providing effective emergency response services and quality prevention and education programmes that will minimize the loss of life and property resulting from fires and other emergencies. Our services are:

  • Respond to emergencies and perform fire suppression, technical rescues, hazardous material containment and render humanitarian services.
  • Prevents, reduce and eliminate hazards that contribute to the occurrence of fires.
  • Enforce regulations and standards for static fire suppression in buildings and other installations to minimize the spread of fire.
  • Ensure compliance with the provisions of the Hazardous Substances Act, 1973 (Act 15 of 1973), the Explosives Act, 1956 (Act 26 of 1956), the applicable regulations made under sections 15 and 16 of the Fire Brigade Services Act, 1987 (Act 99 of 1987).
  • Perform routine, follow-up and specialised inspections of premises; which oversees and ensures the carrying out law enforcement activities at premises and advising the community on fire safety and fire prevention.
  • Perform hydrant inspection and maintenance.
  • Events management applications and approvals.
  • Coordinate resources to identify and reduce risks; in order to minimise the impact of disasters and emergencies on the people, property, environment and economy.
  • Perform public education and awareness programmes.
