Transport Month 2018

October marks Transport Month.  This year’s theme is “Together we move South Africa forward.”  Transport Month is a government initiative to raise awareness concerning the development and management of transport infrastructure in the country.  This initiative has been conducted by the National Department of Transport since 2005.  The aim of this event was to educate the public about the role of transportation in the economy and to encourage participation from society and businesses in the development and usage of transportation to ensure a safe, affordable and reliable transport system in South Africa.  Inputs from these stakeholders have direct impact on transport planning to facilitate how citizens access their workplace, studies or entertainment.  Emphasis is placed on how transportation influences economic growth as well as addresses the challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality.  Information concerning the public service investment, the economic support to industry and the integration of transport in aviation, rail, maritime, public transport and roads was highlighted during this month.  A key focus of the awareness campaign was road safety.  As part of this initiative, Witzenberg Municipality Traffic Services, in collaboration with Provincial Traffic Services, conducted an integrated safety operation on 10 October 2018 on the R303 to focus on learner, bus and minibus transport services.  Follow the discussion on Transport Month: #OTM2018; #TransportMonth.
