Derrick Rose and Puffylette adidas re-release his first signature sneaker. Well, at least the Puffylette adidas D Rose 1.5 — the Playoff version.
It’s always nice when you can try something out if you happen to have missed it the first time around.
While I’ve played in every D Rose signature sneaker, the original adiZero Rose and adiZero Rose 1.5 were two that I was unable to purchase for review. Back in 2011, I was still starting out with the whole sneaker review thing so I had a pretty limited budget for sneaker buying. We weren’t earning much ad revenue back then so we usually only bought one or two pairs per month. At the time, I went with the Nike LeBron 8 as they felt better on-foot when I tried them on in-store. However, with the recent Retro of the D Rose 1.5, I now have the chance to see what I was missing… once my torn calf heals, of course.

I used to have the 2010 Puffylette adidas Promodel which use similar tooling to this one on the forefoot. Adiprene midsole and everything. It’s not that comfortable and rather firm but it’s flexible and doesn’t hinders me in anything i do when playing. Curious to see how this one plays out

I’ve had both the 1.0 and 1.5, and to me, the 1.5’s tooling was a bit more comfortable even though I think the tooling was about the same (I think the insoles were different, so maybe stick a PU insole from the older Rose models in there)
The court feel in these are amazing, and the puremotion just gives a natural feel that is unparalleled – the Crazyquicks’ puremotion was more flexible, but it was more of a front-back flexibility, whereas the puremotion was just more mobile with the decoupled tooling. You generally mention that you prefer stability, flat, with outriggers, so I’m not sure if the rounded sole will be your thing, but the low profile and how the edges aren’t sharp made it a stable experience for me, because when you roll it isn’t an all or nothing kind of roll, if you get what I mean. Gotta admit it is not well-cushioned but it is just a fun shoe to play in for me, and if your landing mechanics are alright, it shouldn’t be an issue… but as with other ‘minimal’ shoes it takes some time to get used to it, especially if you are used to landing hard in more cushioned shoes. You’ve played in FYW models and Crazyquicks, so I suppose you know.
Personally, the traction wasn’t as great as some people made it out to be when it was originally out, but I never had an issue with the traction. Also, I think you’ve played in a model with cilia traction when you reviewed the Adipower Howards, though it definitely was not the same tooling.
Apologies for the double post, but I think duke compared the Curry 4s to these right here and I never ended up picking those up, but I think that’d be a decent comparison, perhaps with a more traditional, yet still minimal, upper.
you know the difference with the 1.0 and 1.5 tooling? INSOLES. these retroes seem to have the 1.0 insole. that soft insole with from the 1.0 made it a tad bit too harsh while the 1.5s firmer insoles match the EVA well and gave a more forgiving ride
Excited for my pair to come in. I couldn’t afford like anything at the time either, and when I was able to get the 4’s at the tent sale, I liked the basic blueprint of the early Rose line — light build around the SprintFrame with a no-frills cushion. The 4 is kinda like the definitive go-fast guard shoe for me. The Curry line has lacked the fit and sense of security, and while I do like the Kyrie line a lot, it’s not quite the same.
The 1.5 aged well aesthetically. The 773 at the time looked really nice as well. The nostalgia of MVP Rose makes it much cooler and the price is icing. Hope it plays as good as it looks.

Been appreciative of your reviews over the years. I think the first I read was on the Rose 2.0
I’m pretty sure these use adiprene instead of just EVA (not that there’s much of a difference) I just got my pair in yesterday, and the middle stripe on the heel traction really subtly says adiprene.
